Do breast cancers found only on ultrasound have positive outcomes? Yes, according to this study from South Korea.

Dr. Soo-Yeon Kim from Seoul National University Hospital and colleagues included 438 women in their study, all of whom had breast cancers found on ultrasound but not on mammography. Of these women, 366 (83.6%) had invasive cancers and 72 (16.4%) had ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Of the invasive cancers, 79.5% were stage I, 17.8% were stage II, and 2.7% were stage III.

A median follow-up at seven years revealed 13 cancer recurrences, 10 of which were invasive cancers and three of which were DCIS. There were no deaths.

"Most women with US-detected breast cancers have an excellent outcome," Kim's group concluded.
