Acertara teams with John Hopkins on focused US study

Ultrasonic acoustic measurement and testing firm Acertara Acoustic Laboratories said it is collaborating with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to assess the utility of focused ultrasound for improving drug delivery to the bladder wall.

The early-stage research will be conducted on rats by Johns Hopkins researchers and Acertara's R&D team, according to the company.

"If effective, this technology could be used to treat a variety of bladder diseases, including bladder cancer, with minimal side effects to the patient," said Acertara's Nicholas Ellens, PhD, in a statement. "Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer among men and this technology has the potential to improve the survival rate of many thousands of people throughout the world."

The Focused Ultrasound Foundation has provided a research grant for the study.
