The University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine has gifted each of its 104 incoming medical students in the class of 2023 with portable ultrasound scanners from Butterfly Network, according to a report published August 26 on MobiHealthNews.

The Butterfly iQ scanner retails for about $2,000; UCI provided the scanners to the students for free, the article noted.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared Butterfly iQ in 2017. The scanner combines capabilities of the typical three probes used in ultrasound into a single ultrawide-band 2D matrix array; its sensors are overlaid on an integrated circuit that encompasses the electronics of a high-performance ultrasound system, according to Butterfly Network.
