Philips Healthcare is directing attention to new consensus and recommendations for the appropriate use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in peripheral vascular disease interventions.
The company said that a presentation at an IVUS symposium held at the Vascular Interventional Advances (VIVA) 2021 conference this week in Las Vegas shared the results of a global analysis conducted by a committee of 40 experts in interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and vascular surgery experts of IVUS in peripheral vascular disease interventions.
"The results of the cross-specialty expert consensus demonstrate strong support for the use of IVUS during peripheral interventions," said interventional cardiologist Dr. Eric Secemsky of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in a statement from Philips. "Future efforts need to focus on improving IVUS implementation into clinical practice and streamlining procedural workflow to help improve our patient outcomes."
The new consensus may help establish global standards of care to adopt into guidelines and improve quality of care in peripheral vascular disease, according to Philips.
