Ultrasound technology developer Butterfly Network is collaborating with the Clinton Health Access Initiative and the Global Ultrasound Institute on a maternal health initiative in South Africa.
The partnership will initiate Phase Two of Butterfly's iQ+ probe deployment and point-of-care ultrasound training program for maternal and fetal health. The program is funded by a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Butterfly received in March 2022.
In phase I of the initiative, 500 iQ+ handheld, whole-body probes were distributed across Kenya that year. Phase II will distribute the remaining 500 devices to healthcare workers across up to six provinces in South Africa. Fifty healthcare practitioners will participate in a week-long training program facilitated by the Global Ultrasound Institute, Butterfly said.
