R2 Technology installs 200th mammography CAD system

Two ImageChecker computer-aided detection (CAD) systems for screening mammography were recently purchased and installed at San Francisco's California Pacific Medical Center, bringing the number of systems in place worldwide to 200.

The CAD systems were installed in the medical center's Breast Health Center, and are manufactured by R2 Technology of Los Altos, CA. ImageChecker is the only FDA-approved CAD system for mammography.

CAD systems are designed to assist radiologists in minimizing false positives. The FDA expanded the original 1998 approval this year to include diagnostic mammograms. According to the company, studies show that for every 100,000 cancers detected by screening mammography, use of the ImageChecker could result in the early detection of up to an additional 20,500 breast cancers.
