ACR launches mammo education campaign

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has launched a campaign devoted to helping women determine when and how often they should receive mammograms, the Reston, VA-based organization said.

Mammography Saves Lives is a collaboration between the ACR, the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), and the American Society of Breast Disease (ASBD). The campaign features a series of TV and radio public service announcements highlighting breast cancer survivors who were diagnosed in their 40s with the aid of mammography, and who urge women to begin getting annual mammograms at age 40.

The campaign also includes a website, MammographySavesLives.org, which allows women to:

  • Sign up to receive an annual reminder e-mail for mammography screening
  • Find scientific information about why they need to start mammography at age 40
  • Hear from leading breast cancer experts about why annual mammograms save lives
  • Share their story of breast cancer survival
  • Find an ACR-accredited mammography facility near them

ACR, SBI, and ASBD expect the campaign to clear confusion, reduce unnecessary breast cancer deaths, and help women avoid extensive treatment for advanced cancers that went undetected because they did not get annual mammograms, ACR said.
