At-risk women not getting breast MRI screening

In other news, women who are at high risk of developing breast cancer may not be getting MRI screening -- in spite of clinical guidelines that recommend it.

That's according to a new article in our Women's Imaging Digital Community by associate editor Kate Madden Yee. The story describes a new study from the University of Colorado, Denver, where researchers found that only 14% of women who meet American Cancer Society criteria for breast MRI screening are getting the studies.

Some cancers could be getting missed because MRI isn't being used as often as it should, the researchers said. Learn more by clicking here.

In other women's imaging news, a team from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles found that contrast-enhanced breast MRI is more accurate than whole-breast ultrasound for planning breast conservation surgery in women recently diagnosed with cancer. MRI had a higher cancer detection rate, although more mastectomies were ordered in the women who got the modality. Get the rest of the story by clicking here.
