Second opinions for mammograms | Conference on 3D printing | Cloud-based archiving

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

When a patient comes in to a specialized breast center with a suspicious mammogram that was acquired at a community facility, it can be a hassle to perform a second opinion read. But it might be worth your time.

That's according to a new article we're featuring in our Women's Imaging Community. Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City took a look at just how often their second opinion reads changed patient management -- and the results might surprise you.

The group found that in nearly 30% of patients, second opinion reviews led to a change in interpretation, and 13% of patients experienced a major change in management. Learn more by clicking here.

In another article in the community, read about how researchers from California improved upon computer-aided detection (CAD) by adding a deep-learning component that enables the algorithm to learn from biopsy-proven cases. Conference on 3D printing

3D printing is one of the most exciting new technologies to come along in a while, and it could have a big effect on the practice of medicine. But what's the best way to implement 3D printing in your practice?

Fortunately, a new conference being held next month in San Francisco promises to answer these questions and more. It's called the 3DHeals International Conference, and it's taking place April 20. Learn more about the conference by clicking here, or visit our Advanced Visualization Community at av.auntminnie.com.

Cloud-based archiving

Cloud-based archiving of medical images has mostly been an intriguing idea so far, as most facilities prefer to keep images onsite. But there might be some good reasons why your institution should look into cloud-based image storage, according to a new article we're highlighting this week in our Imaging Informatics Community. Check it out by clicking here, or go to informatics.auntminnie.com.
