New Mexico's breast density reporting bill was vetoed by Gov. Susana Martinez and thus will not become law just yet.
The bill, HB 243, received unanimous support in both the house and senate, but Martinez did not take action on it before the April 7 deadline, resulting in a pocket veto.
However, Rep. Elizabeth "Liz" Thomson (D-Bernalillo) said she will "definitely bring the bill before the legislature until it becomes law in New Mexico."
This is the second time a density reporting bill was vetoed, according to the Are You Dense Advocacy group. In 2011, Gov. Jerry Brown of California vetoed a density reporting bill. The following year, with the leadership of Sen. Joe Simitian, California became the fifth state to enact a density reporting law on September 22, 2012.
Currently there are 29 state density reporting bills, as Colorado's bill was signed into law on April 6. Iowa and Kentucky are awaiting governors' action.
