A mammography center in Virginia is once again practicing diagnostic imaging after its accreditation and certificate had been suspended for serious image quality problems.
The American College of Radiology (ACR) first warned the Winchester Medical Center - Diagnostic Center in July 2019 that the facility was performing mammography with an unaccredited digital breast tomosynthesis system. Following additional review, the ACR notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August that the center had serious problems with image quality and failed to meet the organization's evaluation criteria.
The ACR revoked the center's accreditation on September 4, 2019. The following day, the FDA suspended the center's Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) certificate and required the facility to notify patients of mammography problems.
The Winchester Medical Center - Diagnostic Center successfully completed patient notification in January, the FDA noted. The ACR and FDA have since reissued its accreditation and MQSA certificate. The center is once again performing mammography.
