Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Critics of breast cancer screening often point to mammography's high false-positive rate, which generates unnecessary recalls for patients. But digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) can deliver significant and sustainable reductions in recall rates, according to a large study from the University of Pennsylvania.
What's more, patients who are called back after DBT have a higher rate of malignancies. The modality also produced higher cancer detection and invasive cancer detection rates, although those did not reach statistical significance over the course of the three-year study.

Perfusion CT aids stroke assessment
For patients with stroke, time is brain. But that old stroke treatment phrase may need a little qualifying, if research presented this week at the American Heart Association's International Stroke Conference is any indication.
A team led by Dr. Jenny Tsai of the Stanford Stroke Center found that the time from symptom onset wasn't always the most reliable predictor of successful revascularization. In their study of more than 100 ischemic stroke patients, CT perfusion imaging was able to identify large areas of brain tissue that could be safely salvaged up to 18 hours after stroke symptoms begin. The time limits had previously been thought to be much more limited.
