Week in Review: COVID-19's cardiac complications | Perils of skipping breast screening | ECR coverage

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

We're starting to learn more about the impact of COVID-19 disease on the heart. A new study from Italian researchers is a case in point, and our coverage of the research was the top story on AuntMinnie.com this past week.

The researchers focused on cardiac CT and cardiovascular MRI to investigate the chronic damage that COVID-19 can cause in the heart. These conditions can include myocarditis, acute coronary syndrome, and thromboembolic events. Check out the story for more on what to look for.

While you're in our CT Community, be sure to check out new stories on imaging and the pandemic, including a study of chest imaging patterns by time period and research from Israel that used an artificial intelligence algorithm to screen head CT exams for signs of intracranial hemorrhage.

Be sure not to miss our coverage of a study in which investigators from Egypt used CT and advanced image processing techniques to discover more about a warrior-pharaoh who was killed on the battlefield some 3,600 years ago. The images from the study are truly stunning.

Perils of skipping breast screening

Missing even one mammography screening appointment can elevate a woman's risk of dying from breast cancer, according to a new study we're featuring in our Women's Imaging Community.

A research group led by Dr. László Tabár of Sweden and Stephen Duffy of the U.K. examined data from 500,000 women who participated in a population-based screening program in Sweden. Women who attended both screening appointments scheduled in the study had half the risk of breast cancer mortality, they found.

ECR coverage

Finally, if you're a fan of the ECR -- like we are -- be sure to visit our sister site AuntMinnieEurope.com for full coverage of this week's meeting. The congress is being held virtually once again, but there is a plethora of high-quality scientific and educational content available online.

Our coverage of ECR 2021 includes a story on European Society of Radiology President Dr. Michael Fuchsjäger taking a turn at the microphone to sing opera during the opening ceremony, advice on how radiologists can survive their first overnight call shift, and a review of the best MRI sequences to use for imaging of patients with multiple sclerosis.

Be sure to check back over the weekend for more coverage of ECR 2021.
