Week in Review: SIIM 2022 opens | Ditching the disc | Faces of PET

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

The annual meeting of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) is back as an in-person conference, and Senior Editor Erik L. Ridley and Assistant Editor Amerigo Allegretto are on the scene in Kissimmee, FL, reporting on the proceedings.

Ditching the disc -- the compact disc (CD), that is -- as a medium for image exchange has been one of the thorniest problems in radiology. But there is hope on the horizon. A speaker at SIIM 2022 described how they were able to eliminate CDs through cloud-based image exchange software that was integrated into their facility's electronic health record (EHR).

Applying an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to detect pulmonary embolism did not significantly improve diagnosis, according to another talk at SIIM 2022. While improvements were made in reducing miss rate and accuracy, they weren't statistically significant.

Our editorial team at SIIM 2022 is also interviewing key opinion leaders in imaging informatics to get their thoughts on the market, in particular artificial intelligence. Watch our interviews with Dr. Peter Chang and Dr. Paul Yi, among others.

Faces of PET

In other news in the world of radiology, an article on how faces could be reconstructed from PET data was our top story for the week. Also scoring highly was a story on an emergency radiologist from Tennessee who described his experience treating patients shot by semi-automatic rifles.
