The U.S. 3-D medical imaging market is expected to generate nearly $1 billion in revenues by 2006, according to a research report by Frost & Sullivan. The growth would represent a nearly five-fold increase over actual revenue totals from 1999, according to the San Jose, CA-based firm.
In order for the 3-D medical imaging market to realize its full potential, Frost & Sullivan believes the number of clinical applications available for 3-D must continue to grow. The company also said that factors such as ease-of-use, image quality and segmentation, and information processing speeds will influence the acceptance of 3-D medical imaging systems in the clinical setting.
A key factor in the growth of the 3-D market is the migration from Unix to PC-based workstations. In addition to cost benefits, PC-based systems could flatten the learning curves typically associated with operating 3-D imaging, according to the report, U.S. 3-D Medical Imaging Markets.
