Medical device firm Smith & Nephew has announced a strategic alliance with image-guided surgery vendor Medtronic Sofamor Danek. Under the terms of the relationship, the two firms will jointly develop, market, and sell image-guided surgery applications for orthopedic procedures.
The exclusive alliance focuses on Medtronic Surgical Navigation Technologies’ new image-guided fluoroscopic surgical navigation technology, according to the companies.
Smith & Nephew’s Memphis-based orthopedic division will co-market the system, called iON (IntraOperative Navigation), for orthopedic trauma and total joint surgery in all countries except Japan and South Korea. Medtronic Sofamor Danek, also in Memphis, will co-market the system for spinal procedures. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
