GE releases FluoroTrak fluoroscopic navigation system

GE Medical Systems subsidiary GE OEC Medical Systems today unveiled 9800 FluoroTrak, a fluoroscopy-based surgical navigation system that incorporates electromagnetic tracking. FluoroTrak will enable lower radiation exposure levels, reduced costs, greater patient comfort, and improved surgical outcomes, according to GE.

The system incorporates a proprietary electromagnetic navigation system coupled with high-resolution 1K x 1K fluoroscopic imaging to enable improved tracking accuracy in the operating room, according to GE. FluoroTrak is the result of a joint development agreement signed earlier this year between GE and Visualization Technology of Dublin, Ireland.

Precise accuracy and easy tool placement are especially important for spine surgeons, GE said. A high degree of accuracy is critical in applications such as spinal pedicle screw placement, where spinal fixation hardware is placed just a few millimeters from the spinal cord, according to the company. And because navigation occurs with the x-ray beam turned off, radiation exposure is reduced significantly, GE said.
