Surgical robotics manufacturer Integrated Surgical Systems (ISS) has sold 10 of its Robodoc surgical assistant systems to Japan's Tokushukai Medical.
The Robodoc image-guided surgery system consists of a robotic arm assembly and a PC-based 3-D planning station called Orthodoc. The system has been used to perform successful total hip replacement surgeries on more than 8,000 patients worldwide, according to Davis, CA-based ISS.
Many of the systems destined for Tokushukai hospitals will be equipped with additional application modules capable of performing procedures such as pinless hip arthroplasty, knee arthroplasty, and revision hip and acetabulum cup planning.
Tokushukai is Japan's largest healthcare provider, with more than 160 medical facilities, including 47 hospitals, throughout Japan, according to ISS. The Robodoc system has an installed base of 37 units worldwide, and is also being marketed in Europe and the Middle East.
