BrainLab adds M. D. Anderson Orlando install

Image-guided surgery (IGS) and stereotactic radiosurgery developer BrainLab said that M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando in Orlando, FL, has installed its Adaptive Respiratory Gating system.

The product enables physicians to target tumors by adjusting to the patient's breathing patterns within a millimeter of accuracy, according to the Munich, Germany-based vendor.

BrainLab said the gating system synchronizes tumor motion with the patient's breathing pattern by acquiring multiple images of the lung tumor. From the images, the 3D movement of the tumor is captured and its location for treatment delivery is calculated.

The technology delivers radiation only when the tumor is in the path of the treatment beam. If the tumor moves out of the treatment beam, the radiation is automatically interrupted to protect healthy tissue.
