NCI awards $8M grant for AI in radiology/pathology

The U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded a five-year, $8 million grant to a multi-institutional group to develop a testbed for using data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze radiology and pathology images.

Designed to integrate information from radiology and pathology to better guide cancer treatment, the project will be run by a team including Dr. Joel Saltz, PhD, of Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY, and colleagues at Stony Brook, Emory University in Atlanta, and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Specifically, the group will use data analytics to identify tumors, cell nuclei, and other objects important to cancer assessment and store all of the data, according to Stony Brook.

The initiative aims to build on and extend the NCI's Cancer Imaging Archive.
