AI for contrast ultrasound | MRI links low blood flow to Alzheimer's | Radiation info on the internet

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Researchers are finding myriad new applications for artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The latest is for analyzing contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) liver exams, according to a new article in our Artificial Intelligence Community.

A multi-institutional team developed a computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) algorithm that analyzes CEUS cine clips to distinguish benign from malignant focal liver lesions. They compared the performance of the algorithm with interpretations provided by both experienced and inexperienced radiologists.

The algorithm performed significantly better than the inexperienced radiologist in the study and comparably to the expert radiologist. Further analysis showed the algorithm could improve the accuracy of both radiologists if used as a second reader. Get the rest of the story by clicking here.

MRI links low blood flow to Alzheimer's

In other news, a new study published this week in Neurology has some intriguing implications for research into the origins of Alzheimer's disease, as researchers from Vanderbilt University used MRI to analyze blood flow in the brain in patients with poor heart function.

They found a relationship between low heart function and reduced blood flow in the right and left temporal lobes on MRI scans. Their theory is that restricted blood flow to these regions could be contributing to early "brain aging," as the temporal lobes are where Alzheimer's disease first begins. Radiation info on the internet

Finally, visit our CT Community for a new article on the accuracy of information found on the internet regarding CT radiation dose. Researchers from Cork University in the Republic of Ireland found that -- shockingly -- not everything you read on the internet is 100% accurate when it comes to radiation dose.
