Is AI taking over RSNA 2017? | Advice from RSNA's opening session

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

CHICAGO - The first day of RSNA 2017 is in the books, and it looks like this could be the year that artificial intelligence (AI) stole the spotlight from big iron.

From the exhibit hall to the scientific sessions to the posters, AI and related disciplines such as machine learning and deep learning are dominating the discussion. Everyone seems to be developing an AI app, many of which are being hyped as the next paradigm shift in the way radiology will be practiced in the years to come.

Will AI's promise live up to the hype? We'll have to wait until future RSNA conferences to find out.

In the meantime, you can check out the articles our editors on the scene in McCormick Place have already filed. In the opening session at RSNA 2017, attendees were urged to continue exploring, inventing, and transforming their discipline by President Dr. Richard Ehman. New technologies like artificial intelligence will surely be disruptive to medical practice, so it's imperative that radiologists get involved in directing their use rather than being directed by someone else.

The former director of the U.S. National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering -- Dr. Roderic Pettigrew, PhD -- also spoke at the opening session, discussing exciting technologies such as virtual reality that he believes can improve the quality of healthcare for all.

Finally, Dr. Elias Zerhouni, former director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, talked about the three principles he believes should determine the future of innovation. Find out what they are -- and read the rest of our coverage of the opening session -- by clicking here.
