The RSNA plans to make research and education in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) an educational priority in coming months.
This month, RSNA will launch the first in a series of live 60-minute webinars on AI and its applications. The first event is scheduled for August 20 and is titled Intro to AI and Machine Learning: Why All the Buzz?
Also in August, RSNA will co-sponsor a U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering workshop on AI in medical imaging, designed to promote collaboration in applications for diagnostic medical imaging.
Rounding out the month will be the RSNA Pneumonia Detection Challenge, which will invite teams to develop algorithms to identify and localize pneumonia on chest x-rays, using images from a publicly available NIH dataset. Evaluations will take place in October, with the most accurate submissions recognized in the Machine Learning Showcase at the 2018 annual meeting. The 2018 challenge will be performed using a software platform from Kaggle, a leader in data science competitions, and Kaggle will donate $30,000 to be split between the top entries.
What's more, a spotlight course to be held September 23-24 in Paris will focus on integrating AI with current medical imaging. It will also look at how AI will impact the future of radiology. Additional AI webinars are scheduled for October 25 and December 11 of this year and February 21, 2019.
RSNA also will launch its new online journal, Radiology: Artificial Intelligence, early next year.
