FDA clears Zebra's AI algorithm for pneumothorax

Artificial intelligence (AI) software developer Zebra Medical Vision has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for an AI algorithm that can alert clinicians of pneumothorax detected on chest x-rays.

The AI algorithm HealthPNX can automatically identify findings on x-rays that indicate pneumothorax and then flag the scan for urgent review by a radiologist. The algorithm functions with Zebra's All-in-One (AI1) software and can be integrated directly into the radiologist's workflow.

Researchers from Zebra have trained their network of AI algorithms on millions of x-rays for detecting more than 40 types of common clinical findings, Zebra said. HealthPNX, along with Zebra's AI algorithm for detecting brain bleeds on head CT, can help reduce turnaround time for emergency care, according to the company.

Zebra received the CE Mark for both of these algorithms earlier this year.
