The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Theseus AI have signed a license agreement for software developed at the university that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret MRI scans of patients' spines.

Theseus AI was formed to commercialize the technology, UCLA said. The software features a machine learning-trained algorithm that provides measurements of spinal stenosis from MRI exams. The algorithm also compares these measurements with those of patients of the same gender and a similar age and height to determine the degree of disease.

UCLA's agreement with Theseus AI was facilitated by the university's Technology Development Group, which manages its intellectual property portfolio.
