The boards of directors of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the Center for Healthcare Information Management (CHIM) are considering a move that would bring the organizations back together. The combined groups might better serve individuals and companies involved in the healthcare information technology market, HIMSS and CHIM said yesterday.
CHIM, originally formed within the structure of HIMSS 15 years ago, became independent in 1989. Since that time the Ann Arbor, MI-based organization has continued to collaborate on education and networking activities with the Chicago-based HIMSS. When it came time recently to renew the operating agreement between the groups, board members on both sides recognized the synergy that would be created by recombining, the organizations said.
The boards are currently examining the many legal, financial, and operational issues related to combining operations. According to HIMSS officials, the results of those examinations will be presented to the HIMSS and CHIM boards at their respective meetings in May.
