German technology conglomerate Siemens announced an agreement to supply healthcare IT applications and infrastructure, medical equipment, telecommunications, and building technologies to the new HealthSouth Medical Center in Birmingham, AL.
The hospital is also using other clinical and technology companies in its flagship medical center, including tech giant Oracle, which HealthSouth said last March would provide record-keeping and other electronic technology.
Each patient at the center will wear a wireless Siemens monitor that will immediately notify a clinician if the patient has a problem, and will indicate the exact location of the patient. Physicians will be able to monitor a patient’s medical status anytime, anywhere, according to the companies. Each hospital bed will be connected to the Internet, allowing videoconferencing by physicians and family members.
The project utilizes the expertise of several Siemens companies -- Siemens Medical Solutions of Iselin, NJ, and its Health Services, Information & Communications Networks, Energy and Automation, and Building Technologies units. The company will provide the hospital’s major technological infrastructure, including climate control; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); alarm; and security systems.
