Healthcare informatics developer IDX Systems of Burlington, VT, has acquired structured-reporting firm PointDx of Winston-Salem, NC.
IDX said it plans to integrate PointDx's REX structured-reporting technology into its Imagecast RIS/PACS software. The company believes the integration will result in a completely new method of diagnostic reporting, procedures coding, and outcomes monitoring.
Structured reporting involves the use of a common medical vocabulary and key medical images to create a concise, properly structured report for referring physicians, according to IDX. The company believes that such reports enable improved outcomes monitoring and can automate steps in the coding and billing process.
Integrated PointDx/IDX software is expected to be at pilot sites in the first half of 2005. IDX will also feature PointDx technology in its booth at the upcoming RSNA meeting later this month.
The purchase price for the acquisition is expected to be about $8 million, and will be accounted for using the purchase method of accounting. IDX said it anticipates a fourth-quarter cash payout for the deal of about $3 million.
