Dear RIS Insider,
April 20 is the official deadline for U.S. healthcare providers and payors to comply with the HIPAA Security Rule. However, according to a survey conducted in January of this year, an overwhelming majority of these organizations report that they are far from compliant with the regulations.
If your organization has yet to comply with the HIPAA security rule, you've got a lot of company. The U.S. Healthcare Industry HIPAA Compliance Survey found that only 30% of the surveyed payors, and a mere 18% of the responding providers, are currently compliant with the HIPAA Security Rule.
It's not just the security rule that's plaguing U.S. healthcare, either. Adopting the HIPAA Transactions and Code Sets (TCS) and privacy requirements are proving problematic for many. Even more troubling are reports that security and privacy breaches of U.S. healthcare systems are on the rise, and that formal complaints -- at the federal level and in civil proceedings -- are starting to grow.
