Radiology's information technology sector has long been a leader in the drive for interoperability among disparate systems. A prime example is the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), a joint initiative of the RSNA and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), which has developed data profiles that have become de-facto standards for healthcare informatics.
Independent silos of information and proprietary data protocols are no longer simply an annoyance in healthcare information technology (HIT); arguably they are a major factor in the quality of patient care. Organizations such as IHE and the newly formed Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) are providing the roadmap for interoperability, and radiology has responded.
The IT developers showcasing systems, applications, and tools at this year's RSNA show will demonstrate the strength of radiology informatics as a marquee player in the HIT enterprise.
RIS products have continued to grow in features over the past year, with systems offering tight integration with PACS, management of multiple sites, expanded report and billing capabilities, and interoperability capabilities with other information technology such as an electronic medical record (EMR) system or hospital information system (HIS).
New communications options with other departments and practices will be demonstrated, as will major workflow improvements designed to take advantage of a completely digital environment -- from scheduling to registration to diagnostic reports and reimbursement.
Innovative products from both new and well-established IT developers await RSNA conference attendees as they browse the technical exhibit halls of Chicago's McCormick Place on the shores of Lake Michigan later this month.
