Two U.S. Congressional representatives have introduced legislation that would help physicians in smaller practices implement healthcare information technologies (HIT).
U.S. Reps. Charles Gonzalez (D-TX) and Phil Gingrey (R-GA) introduced the National Health Information Incentive Act of 2007, which would provide physicians adopting HIT with initial financial support through grants, loans, and tax deductions, as well as ongoing Medicare reimbursement incentives.
The bill already has the support of the American College of Physicians, which estimates that 20% of its members are in solo practice, while 50% are in practices of five or fewer physicians.
