U.S. House passes healthcare IT workforce bill

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the 10,000 Trained by 2010 Act (H.R. 1467) on Wednesday. The bill calls for a trained workforce capable of innovating, implementing, and using health communications and information technology (IT).

H.R. 1467 authorizes the National Science Foundation to award grants to institutions of higher education to develop and offer educational and training programs for healthcare workers and professionals in applied health and medical informatics.

The passage of H.R. 1467 was led by Congressmen David Wu (D-OR), Phil Gingrey (R-GA), Bart Gordon (D-TN), and Ralph Hall (R- TX), and supported by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
