mHealth Initiative launched at TEPR 2009

A new nonprofit group called the mHealth Initiative has been formed to promote the use of cell phones for healthcare applications.

mHealth was formally launched at the Toward the Electronic Patient Record (TEPR) conference, sponsored by the Medical Records Institute and held in Palm Springs, CA, from February 2-5.

The new organization's objective is the dissemination of the latest information on health applications through wireless phone devices. It plans to identify applications for which healthcare solutions are currently developed and/or are currently available, and it also plans to serve as an international center and marketplace where information can be obtained about cell phone and other mobile device-related developments in healthcare.

Claudia Tessier, vice president of Boston-based Medical Records Institute, will head the mHealth Initiative, which will also be located in Boston. The new organization is open to members who are vendors, software developers, healthcare planners, health informatics professionals, and healthcare organizations. Information is available at www.mhealthinitiative.org.

At the TEPR meeting, Tessier announced plans for the mHealth Initiative to create a roadmap for a new health system based on wireless mobile devices, new software, new interoperability solutions, and secure wireless transmission. The new organization replaces the Medical Records Institute's Center for Cell Phone Applications in Healthcare.
