Canadian hospital hits HIMSS milestone

South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver, British Columbia, is the first hospital in Canada to achieve stage 6 of the HIMSS Analytics' electronic medical record (EMR) adoption program. It joins 49 hospitals in North America to reach the sixth of seven levels of EMR adoption.

HIMSS Analytics of Chicago developed an EMR adoption model (EMRAM) to objectively measure the progress of hospitals and health systems converting from paper-based to electronic record keeping. It scores hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics database on their progress in completing the eight stages to create a paperless patient record environment.

No hospital in North America is yet ranked at stage 8. Three hospitals in the NorthShore University HealthSystem of Evanston, IL, and 12 California hospitals of the Kaiser Permanente Health Foundation in Oakland, CA, have achieved stage 7 status.
