What's the value and impact of a regular, robust clinical audit of the quality of radiology reports? An impressive improvement in quality.

The U.K. has deployed a national clinical audit program to evaluate cranial, spinal, and musculoskeletal MRI exams. The audit program, although limited to MRI exams, is believed to be the largest, ongoing imaging report audit ever performed.

Exams are randomly selected and reviewed for technical merit, reporting language, and quality of clinical opinion. Feedback is provided to the author of each report.

Dr. Stephen Golding, a consultant radiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital of the University of Oxford and the clinical guardian of the program, reported that performance scores have steadily risen over the past three years, and the majority of reports now meet the highest standards of quality and clarity.
