Microsoft to purchase healthcare IT firm

Microsoft plans to acquire Sentillion, a private company that specializes in healthcare software, the Redmond, WA-based firm said.

The deal further cements Microsoft's commitment to invest in the healthcare industry, according to Microsoft. Sentillion's context management and single sign-on technologies will be combined with Microsoft's Amalga Unified Intelligence System (UIS).

Amalga UIS integrates clinical, administrative, and financial information from disparate information systems. It is in use at more than 115 hospitals in the U.S., Microsoft said.

Sentillion will continue to sell and support its products to new and existing customers and will remain in its Andover, MA, headquarters. The deal is expected to close in early 2010.
