The Obama administration has announced the availability of $60 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds as part of a new healthcare IT initiative.
The Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects (SHARP) were announced on December 18 by David Blumenthal, head of the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology.
The SHARP grants will focus on:

- Harnessing health IT in a patient-focused manner and aligning the technology with the day-to-day practice of medicine to support providers as they care for patients
- Developing security and risk mitigation policies and the technologies necessary to build and preserve the public trust as health IT systems become more widespread
- Identifying strategies to enhance the use of health IT to improve quality of care while protecting patient privacy
The ONC will conduct a technical assistance teleconference about the projects on December 22 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Click here for information about participating. The application deadline for research grants is January 15, 2010.
