Speech recognition and software developer Nuance Communications of Burlington, MA, is debuting a voice-enabled documentation and search application for smartphones at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference in Atlanta.
Dragon Medical Mobile is based on Nuance's Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search applications for the iPhone, which are powered by its Dragon NaturallySpeaking software. The new mobile applications for smartphones will allow physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers to access clinical information and document patient encounters using their mobile devices.
Nuance plans to showcase:
- Dragon Medical Mobile Dictation, which allows clinicians to dictate patient notes, e-mails, and text messages instead of typing them on a mobile device
- Dragon Medical Mobile Search, which allows clinicians to speak a request to conduct fast and easy searches on various medical Web sites
- Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder, which allows clinicians to conduct on-the-go dictation on a smartphone
- Dragon Medical Mobile SDK, which allows developers such as electronic health record vendors to build software that can incorporate Nuance's Dragon Medical Mobile applications
In other Nuance news, the company announced two collaborations in its natural language processing (NLP) initiative for the healthcare industry: The company has acquired technology from clinical narrative processing technology developer Language and Computing of Bethesda, MD, and has inked an agreement with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston that will allow Nuance to integrate its NLP package, Smart Dictation, into its own portfolio.
