Clinical informatics gets board-certified status

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has approved the field of clinical informatics as a new subspecialty for physicians, according to an announcement made by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA).

The goal is for the first board examination to be administered in the fall of 2012, with the first certificates awarded in 2013. The American Board of Preventive Medicine will administer the examination.

AMIA is developing preparatory materials as both online and in-person courses, which it plans to have available in the spring of 2012.
