Dr. Charles Kahn Jr., of the Medical College of Wisconsin, will discuss how and how well the translation system works in this poster presentation. In brief, the system extracts reporting elements and text strings from a selected template and passes them through the Google Translate application programming interface (API). An editor then reviews the translated template, after which it becomes available for download as an XML document.
To date, Arabic, Chinese, and Turkish templates have been created using this system. Results before human editing have been variable, due in part to the specialized terminology of radiology and of medicine in general. More than 70% of terms have been accurately translated into Turkish, but this decreased to less than half with Arabic and Chinese translations.
