The American College of Radiology (ACR), the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), and the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) have jointly released new standards for the electronic practice of medical imaging.
The new "Technical Standard for Electronic Practice of Medical Imaging" includes CIIP certification through the American Board of Imaging Informatics (ABII) that will demonstrate competency to practice as an imaging informatics professional.
The new standard states that a qualified imaging informatics professional is competent to practice in the relevant areas of informatics. The professional should have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in computer science or its equivalent, as well as continuing education and experience in imaging informatics to demonstrate competency. Certification through the ABII can be used as validation of the professional's qualification.
According to the ACR, each guideline and standard representing a policy has undergone an extensive review and consensus process, and was approved by the Commission on Quality and Safety, as well as the ACR Board of Chancellors, the ACR Council Steering Committee, and the ACR Council.
