The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said it will once again accept hardship exception applications to enable healthcare provides to avoid penalties for not meeting meaningful use (MU) criteria.
Applications by eligible professionals and hospitals will now need to be submitted by November 30. The previous application deadlines for hardship exceptions were April 1 for eligible hospitals and July 1 for eligible professionals.
CMS will accept applications from hospitals that have been unable to implement 2014 Edition certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) due to delays. It will also accept applications from eligible professionals who were unable to attest by October 1, and from eligible hospitals that were unable to attest by July 1 using the flexibility options included in the recent 2014 CEHRT Flexibility Rule, CMS said.
