In the hope of improving patient care and increasing the accuracy of communications, the American Medical Association (AMA) voted on Monday to adopt a policy that supports hands-on medical student access to electronic health records (EHRs) during their training.
The policy calls on AMA to work with medical school accrediting bodies to encourage U.S. medical schools, along with residency and fellowship training programs, to educate students about using electronic devices in the exam room and at the bedside, according to the organization. It also encourages AMA to support the practice of medical students documenting patient encounters and entering clinical orders -- with appropriate supervision -- into patient EHRs.
