Dear Imaging Informatics Insider,
It's never good for any imaging study to slip through the cracks, but it's particularly bad when it's an exam of a neonatal patient. When a PACS software upgrade led to a spike in report turnaround times for neonatal imaging studies, a group from Georgetown University responded by developing software to page radiologists when these exams were available to read.
After adopting the notification software, turnaround times returned to traditional levels. Learn how the researchers were able to achieve that result in this issue's Insider Exclusive, which you can access before our regular members.
In other recent feature articles, the latest installment of our Mobile App Spotlight series takes a look at Viewbox, an iPad app that aims to assist users in viewing, organizing, and presenting teaching file images from a variety of different sources.
Researchers may feel they don't have the time to use social media, but it's worth the effort, according to a study from Duke University Medical Center. A group led by Dr. Jenny Hoang found that a blog post promoted on social media had more than 10 times the page views of research articles published online on the same topic in two peer-reviewed journals. In a remote location in the eastern Arctic region of Canada, images of patients used to be transferred by aircraft to the southern part of the country for interpretation. Thanks in part to PACS and a satellite link, that's no longer the case. Learn how healthcare is being revolutionized in the region by reading our article by contributing writer Louise Gagnon.
If you are still reading CT images off your PACS without hanging protocols, you might want to start. It's the equivalent of going through your email inbox without a spam filter, according to Dr. Jeffrey Mandel of Tufts University. Click here to learn why the short-term pain of setting up good hanging protocols can yield long-term time savings.
