EMR integration revamps DEXA reporting

In this poster presentation, researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center will share how they streamlined the process of reporting dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) studies by exporting data to the electronic medical record (EMR).

Interpreting DEXA studies can require having to manually enter lots of computer-generated information into reports. This process is time-consuming and prone to errors, according to presenter Dr. Jason Wachsmann.

"I was concerned about the issue and started to look into solutions with our IT department," Wachsmann said.

Exporting DEXA numerical data to the electronic medical record (EMR) from Epic Systems via an HL7 engine led to improvements in both accuracy and speed for DEXA reporting.

"The solution is Epic-based, which is one of the most used EMRs in the U.S., and will therefore be widely applicable to many practices," he told AuntMinnie.com.
