CHICAGO - In hopes of stimulating adoption of image sharing by vendors and radiology practices, the RSNA is teaming up with nonprofit organization the Sequoia Project to launch the Image Share Validation Program.
The initiative will get underway in 2016 with a pilot testing program; the RSNA will conduct validation testing of commercial systems for image sharing capabilities with the support of the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University and the Sequoia Project. Those vendors who pass the testing will be able to use the RSNA Image Share Validation mark to demonstrate that their products have achieved compliance with the program, according to the RSNA.
The Sequoia Project, which manages interoperability initiatives such as the eHealth Exchange health data sharing network, will assist in administering the RSNA Image Share Validation program and aid in communications, outreach, and promotion to its constituent members, the RSNA said.
In the pilot program, the RSNA will validate four "bundles" of functionality based on Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) profiles and actors:
- XDS-I Document Source and Consumer
- XDS-I Registry and Repository
- XCA-I Gateway
- Patient-focused image sharing through a personal health record (PHR) system
Vendors can choose to be tested for any combination of bundles, according to the RSNA. Partially funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, the validation program is intended to be self-sustaining after its initial launch, the organization noted.
