Neiman Institute launches imaging research tool

The Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute (HPI) has launched a free resource that allows researchers to use Medicare and other payor claims databases to identify and characterize medical imaging by noninvasive or invasive procedures, modality, body region, and clinical focus.

The Neiman Imaging Types of Service coding platform is an open-source classification system that allows users to extract utilization and cost data, so as to better examine the role and value of medical imaging. It was developed by Dr. Richard Duszak, HPI's chief medical officer, and colleague Dr. Andrew Rosenkrantz of NYU Langone Medical Center.

"As medical imaging becomes increasingly subspecialized, a robust, openly available classification system is necessary to better support researchers and policymakers in their efforts," Duszak said in a statement released by HPI. "Good data, along with this standardized coding system, will help in further demonstrating the role and value of imaging."
