In a move aimed at expanding its population health management portfolio, Siemens Healthineers has inked a deal to acquire clinical decision-support (CDS) and imaging workflow software provider Medicalis. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
In addition to providing its CDS platform, Medicalis also offers enterprise imaging workflow management software, as well as referral management applications for tasks such as patient appointment scheduling. Siemens said the acquisition would extend its strategy for value-based healthcare across the health system enterprise and hospital departmental levels.
Siemens believes the Medicalis product line is well-positioned in the short term to help consolidating providers orchestrate and standardize their imaging workflow, as well as to achieve compliance with the CDS provisions in the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 (PAMA). With an expected effective date of January 1, 2018, providers will be mandated to consult appropriateness CDS when ordering certain advanced imaging tests, Siemens said.
The vendor said customers will also benefit from being able to control the CDS content on the Medicalis platform, enabling them to establish an evolving standard of care based on evidence and their own health system's experience.
Siemens said that seven of the top 25 health systems in U.S. use software from the San Francisco and Kitchener, Ontario-based firm.
The companies offered no timetable for completing the transaction, which still faces regulatory and customary closing conditions.
