Dear AuntMinnie Member,
One of the drawbacks to multidetector-row CT is the massive volume of image data produced by the new scanners. Fortunately, imaging facilities are finding that advanced visualization and digital image management offer solutions to the MDCT data deluge.
In this week's PACS Digital Community, we're featuring an article by staff writer Erik L. Ridley on a Korean hospital that set up a miniPACS network dedicated to handling data from its MDCT scanners. The miniPACS stores the initial thin-section volumetric datasets, while thick-section datasets are forwarded to the hospital's main PACS.
The group found that using the CT-dedicated miniPACS reduced the strain that MDCT studies placed on the main PACS network, while preserving access to original CT data for the limited number of users who still needed it.
