PACS data migration: How to protect yourself

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

We revisit the issue of PACS data migration this week in our PACS Digital Community, with part II of a series by PACS consultant Michael Gray on how to best plan for making the transition to a new PACS vendor.

In part I of the series, Mr. Gray addressed the problem of proprietary data storage -- when vendors use proprietary schemes like compression algorithms to store image data. When an imaging facility decides to switch to a new PACS vendor, frequently all of its data has to be converted into a format that can be read by the new archiving software.

In this week's update, he advocates that facilities take a more proactive approach to data storage, with the ultimate goal of making data migration less painful when it inevitably occurs. This can be accomplished through a fundamental change in the way data is routed within the PACS network, a change that moves the archive forward in the data-management process.
